Web 1.0 > 2.0: Content Migration
Summary
As the Creative Production Manager for a major retail eCommerce site, I led the team that created all images and wrote copy for the tens of thousands of products we sold online.
Because we upgraded the site with new features and functionality, we changed platforms and had to migrate all 200,000 assets to a new CMS.
Challenges
Managing the migration process while simultaneously maintaining day-to-day asset production for the existing site.
Balancing creative resources to manage both sites.
Learning a new CMS and its intricacies for troubleshooting.
Developing a new file naming structure to allow for similar items to be swatched together; mapping the old name to the new and renaming thousands of files.
Validating the transferred files via QA of the staging site.
Working closely with DevOps and our CMS CCR to troubleshoot technical problems like video playback issues and swatch functionality not working as expected.
Outcomes
Launched on time with zero interruption to ongoing business needs.
100% image file retention from one platform to the other.
Though we continued to iterate and make the site more user-friendly as time went by, we did launch successfully with our critical functionality must-haves in place.
The site consistently outperformed store sales by a margin of 10% to 20%.
